The key to improving oral health is prevention. "Dental plaque" is the germs that stick on our teeth. Once it grows, it will accumulate and result in tooth decay and periodontal disease. Thus, we have to develop proper living habits. For instance, we have to develop a balanced diet; brush our teeth twice a day, avoid eating or drinking highly acidic foods and drinks; avoid eating hard foods; and use dental floss after meals. While preventing new dental problems, we also have to prohibit existing dental ills from deteriorating.
Besides, we have to do dental check-up annually, so that dentists can provide professional oral care for individuals based on their respective dental conditions and needs, like teaching them proper teeth-brushing methods, the techniques in using dental floss, when to use interdental brush and giving recommendations about healthy diet. If necessary, dentists will let patients undergo dental x-ray or some other preventive therapies, like scaling, or putting on fissure sealant. As we all know, dental ills give no symptoms or pain at early stage. Therefore, regular dental check-up can prevent and cure dental problems.
