Haven of Hope has introduced a free cataract surgery service for eligible elderly, which has only a month-long waiting time. This is much shorter than the waiting time at Hospital Authority hospitals, which can be up to ten years.
According to statistics from the Hospital Authority (HA), more than 7,000 elderly are currently waiting for a cataract operation and the waiting time was recently extended to almost 10 years in the Kowloon East Cluster. “If the elderly have optical or cataract problems, they are prone to falling down and often suffer broken bones as a result. This leads to hospital stays, which will increase the risk of virus infection and mean long term medical treatment. A seemingly small optical problem can have severe consequences,” Dr Lam Ching-choi, Chief Executive Officer of Haven of Hope Christian Service said.
Adding “Early treatment for this problem is important yet there is a long waiting time at HA hospitals. Our new service aims to help elevate this problem and to bring clear sight to those elderly that cannot afford surgery and yet are in urgent need.”
Unlike many cataract services that focus only the surgery Haven of Hope's cataract service is a comprehensive service including finding suitable candidates, arranging home visits and assessment, consultations, follow-up by social workers, and caring before and after the surgery.
“This is a very holistic and comprehensive set of services.” Dr Lam Kit-yan, one of the ophthalmologists in this programme said.
The cataract service is part of the NGO's Charity Medical Service that was introduced last year and also includes Optometry, Drug Consultation, Dermatology, Dental Service and free Chinese Medicine Service. To date more than 60 eligible elderly (aged 65+) have had the surgery. “My vision is back. The happiness I feel being able to see the faces of my family and friends cannot be expressed with words,” said Mrs Yeung, one of the recipients.
In the early 1950s, Haven of Hope Christian Service (the Haven of Hope) began providing medical services for refugees. Beginnings from a makeshift clinic on a stone slab providing medical services and alms, the Haven of Hope has today developed into a flourishing, service-oriented enterprise providing health care, elderly care, rehabilitation services and evangelistic work.
The Haven of Hope values the lives of people. Our mission Prayer, Mission and Core Values are summed up by the phrase “With Love, We Serve and Care”. Our aim is to love and care the service users and our staff in the love of Christ, enrich their lives through holistic love and care.
